"Theme Thoughts" is a quick look into one of the 34 Gallup StrengthsFinder 2.0 Themes. I'll try and do one of these posts each week, and will share what I've learned from stories and ideas shared by other strengths coaches, as well as my personal thoughts, experiences and applications.
"Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by it's ability to climb a tree, it will live it's whole life believing that it is stupid." - Albert Einstein
What is Individualization
Gallup states those exceptionally talented in the Individualization theme are intrigued with the unique qualities of each person. They have a gift for figuring out how people who are different can work together productively. Individualizers are customizers. Individualizers do not believe in a one-size-fits-all approach and have difficulty accepting standardization.
Of all of my top 5 signature themes, and the rest of the 29 Gallup StrengthsFinder themes for that matter, Individualization is my favorite. I think Individualization gets to the heart of the StrengthsFinder assessment and Strengths-Based Development movement. It recognizes the uniqueness in individuals and celebrates the different ways in which we work, communicate and live. It provides power to the diversity of individuals.
I call it my SuperTheme because I use it every day to make my way through life. Also, I can see my other signature themes rolling up into my Individualization and helping me succeed:
Learner: I love to learn about others, their uniqueness, and what motivates them
Input: I love to have that perfect resource available when a client is in need
Futuristic: I understand that everyone's path is not the same, nor should it be
Achiever: I recognize that success/achievement looks different for each individual
Whether it be a difficult conversation at home, a project at work that is falling behind, or trying to figure out that magic formula for getting my second son to sleep (it was different than with our first...I thought every kid was the same haha).
My Coaching (and my life)
Individualization is at the heart of my coaching. In fact, I think if I had to choose one theme to exemplify my coaching it would be Individualization. I love the one-on-one sessions! I love look at each person I meet, and see the uniqueness and value that they bring. I despise standardized leadership training; in fact, I'll be doing a blog post soon about how lame & ineffective they really are.
I think that in order for individuals to function & achieve their best, they need to be recognized as individuals. Their needs, dreams, aspirations and strengths all need to be examined on a one-on-one basis. Tiger Woods & Phil Mickelson don't get together every week and get a canned lesson from the same coach. You and your people need individualized coaching and training to reach their best.
Of course there are times when standardization in biz is necessary, but when it comes to people, there are no shortcuts to greatness.
